Starting from October, the Counseling team at Living Word Shanghai launched a series of social-emotional learning class, called “Choose Love Enrichment Program.” It teaches four important character values: Courage, Gratitude, Forgiveness and Compassion in Action, one topic per month. The program cultivates optimism, resilience and personal responsibility. Through this program, we will guide students improve their mental health and academic performance.

The program is taught by four teachers: David, Damian, Katrina, and Belinda. In November we finished the topic of “Gratitude.” Here is the summary.

(1) Gratitude is mindful thankfulness and the ability to be thankful even when things are challenging. We can be grateful for anything: people, places, ideas, relationships, nature, things you’ve learned, and more.

1

(2) Gratitude has plenty of benefits, ex. being happier, improving health and relationship, making us more resilient, helping us relax and sleep better.

3

(3) Students played scenarios in groups. They were required to describe situations in which there is a person very different from others, and talked about five ways to deal with that person: exclude, avoid, allow, accept, and appreciate. This practice encourages students to appreciate other people, and enhance their willingness to give gratitude.

4

(4) Try to be grateful when your values conflict with others’, when you’re feeling challenged and out of your comfort zone, when you aren’t being treated fairly or are facing significant adversity. Such experiences push you to grow and become stronger.

The teachers also use some other practices to mobilize students’ engagement. For instance, Belinda made students play a drama about helping and gratitude in daily life; David and Damian had students write down descriptions of group members they appreciate, and share those messages in the groups; Katrina brought in interesting games that made the class vivid and has more interactions.

After the November class, we made an online survey to see if the students find the classes helpful. Here is the result based on 43 respondents:

About whether the classes were helpful for students’ emotion, 79% of the respondents checked “very true” while 21% checked “moderately true.”

About whether the classes were helpful for students’ relationship, 56% of the respondents checked “very true” while 44% checked “moderately true.”

93% of the respondents agreed that the teachers prepared and taught the classes well.

Many students commented that they wish to have more classes under this program, and have more activities in the classes.

The counseling team will continue the program next semester. We will improve its quality based on the students’ feedback, making it a richer and more vivid experience.
